Fornasetti – portrait of a woman

DESIGN – The Fornasetti plates are made by Italian painter and graphic designer Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988). Fornasetti took everyday objects and filled them with style and wit.

Our favourite Fornasetti series is the one he called Themes and Variations – variations of a woman’s face. The woman was Lina Cavalieri, who Fornasetti discovered in a French magazine. She resembles Mona Lisa in that she was perfect for Fornasetti’s idea – it must’ve been her archetypal, classic female features. Now the face adorns a series of dinner plates and other objects.

The plates are handmade in Italy out of high quality German porcelain.
